How to Slipstream USB 3.0 Drivers Into Windows 7 Installation Media

Issue: You can boot to your Windows 7 32/64-Bit media, but when it reaches the screen that asks you to select your language your mouse and keyboard do not work.

Why this happens: Starting with the Skylake chipset, Intel has removed the USB 2.0 controller from the motherboard chipset. Compounding this issue is that Windows 7 did not include native USB 3.0 drivers, where Windows 8.1 and 10 include the drivers, so they do not have this issue. This issue is not unique to Cybernet, it is an industry-wide problem.

How to fix this issue: In order for Windows to recognize USB devices connected to the USB 3.0 ports during installation, we need to inject USB 3.0 drivers into the Windows 7 installation media.

What you will need: A Windows 7 32 or 64-Bit installation disk. If all you have is an ISO file, burn that to a disk for this project. You will also need a flash drive that is 8GB or larger in size. This flash drive will get erased during this project, so please back up your data. Finally, you will need a tool to inject the drivers into the media. We have found that the Gigabyte USB 3.0 driver injection tool is very simple and quick to perform this task.

Step 1: Download the Gigabyte USB 3.0 Driver Injector Tool from this link.

Step 2: Unzip the Gigabyte tool to a folder on your desktop.

Step 3: Insert your Windows installation disk into your optical drive. This has to be a disk.

Step 4: Insert an 8GB or larger flash drive into. This flash drive will get erased.

Step 5: Run WindowsImageTool.exe from the folder you unzipped the Gigabyte tool into. Point the program to the Windows installation disk from the top drop-down and select your flash drive from the bottom drop down. You do not need to change any settings. Click Start and the program does the rest.

When this process finishes you will have a Windows 7 installation USB flash drive with USB 3.0 drivers injected. Using this flash drive, you will have keyboard and mouse functionality throughout the the operating system installation.

Tip: If you use a USB 3.0 flash drive for this project, your installation will be faster, thanks to USB 3.0 drivers getting installed before the installation.
